The Pyrenean Sheepdog - FAQs

Q What size are they?
A The Pyrenean Sheepdog is a medium sized dog.
Q What health problems do they have?
A Hip dysplasia, epilepsy and PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosis) have been found within the breed. All puppies are now screened for PDA before they leave the breeder. All breeding stock must have their hips x-rayed and scored under the BVA/KC scheme.
Q Do they need much exercise?
A At least 1 hour off lead exercise per day is recommended.
Q Do they moult?
A The hair tends to come out in tufts after scratching rather than individual hairs.
Q How much grooming do they need?
A This very much depends on the length and thickness of the coat. Anything from half an hour once a week to a few minutes every day.

Q Do they bark much?
A They do bark and are very good guard dogs.
Q Do they get on with small children?
A If the dog is introduced to the children when it is very young there shouldn’t be a problem. The same applies to other animals in the household.
Children must be taught to respect dogs.
Q How long do they live?
A They can live up to the age of 16.
Q Do they like to work and are they are trainable?
A These dogs are highly intelligent and love to work. They are very trainable but need respect and kindness in training.
Q Can they be left all day?
A These dogs love to be with their master. They can be left for a reasonable length of time but do not like to be left on their own for long periods of time on a regular basis.
Q Do they need a garden?
A These dogs are very active and they need a reasonable sized garden where they can run off some of their energy.
Q Can they live in a kennel?
A NO, they would not happily live in a kennel.
